Infilling

3 - Infilling a brass plaque

Infilling is the process of adding colour to engraving. It can be as simple as rubbing pigment over the engraving with a sponge, or as involved as injecting colour into each letter by hand.

Infilling a Brass Plaque

Brass plaques can be infilled by using a brush or a syringe. Air bubbles are trapped in paint when a brush is used. For uncoated plaques this can cause pitting in the letters. Plaques are exposed to high temperatures when they are given an anti-tarnish coating. This heat causes air bubbles to burst and create blemishes in the coating. Injecting the paint minimises the risk of air bubbles.

The infilling leaves some paint on the surface of the plaque. To remove this excess paint, and to get an even finish, the plaque is sanded and polished. We offer both machine and hand polished finishes.

Infilling an acrylic Panel

Many materials can be infilled by rubbing paint over the engraved item. The paint fills the engraved areas and any paint remaining on the surface is wiped away.
